Men and women live in a giant silo underground, subject to a series of regulations that are supposed to protect them from the toxic and broken world above. Whether they’re exploring the stars, escaping dystopias, or making the world a better place, these women are what science fiction is all about. Season 1 is "The Gauntlet" – the book consists of 82 chapters. Fans lying on the floor are turned the wrong way in various episodes, in terms of the orientation of the blades. It’s an interesting look at the history of the underground bunker, a people who have survived the land for so long that a civilization has developed within it, with doctrines, myths, beliefs, rituals, and ceremonies rooted in forgotten events. A status quo social structure is established. And when the status quo that maintains order is challenged, execution and punishment ensue. A power structure is established that creates a population that is both figuratively and literally stratified from the top of the silo to the bottom. That’s the premise, and while it’s not entirely original (think Snowpiercer, Dark City, etc.), there’s enough novelty here that it seems to have worked well for a TV series starring Oyelowo, alongside familiar faces in Rashida Jones and Will Patton. (But as the show’s poster suggests, they’re guest stars, giving way to the regular cast, with Rebecca Ferguson in the lead role.) The show looks pretty decent, with good production values. There are elaborate sets and good CGI to provide a believable atmosphere. While a suspicious mind will figure out some obvious conspiracies early on, there are mysteries that will keep you watching.
